Best of Show celebration | Amelia Island concours photos

A 1929 Duesenberg J-218 Town Limousine and a 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder were accorded Best of Show honors March 8 as the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The concours honors two Best of Show winners, one among traditional concours cars and the other for “concours de sport.”

Duesenberg limo was built for California gold rush heir

The Duesenberg, owned by the Lehrman Collection of Palm Beach, Florida, was built for George Whittell Jr., a California gold rush heir who famously and fortunately liquidated his stock portfolio — valued at approximately $50 million — just two days before the crash of 1929.

Known as a playboy and street racer, Whittell Jr. collaborated with Murphy on a fleet of coachbuilt custom Duesenbergs.

“This distinctive Murphy-bodied Town Limousine sports an aluminum roofline that allows the doors to be curved upward into the roof,” concours officials pointed out in their announcement. “This feature was carried forward into several future designs for Murphy.

“The most distinctive features of the J-218 were the angled windshield, surrounded by ‘clear vision’ window pillars and the classic Art Deco paint scheme. The bare aluminum belt line was polished to a mirror classic Art Deco paint scheme.

“The bare aluminum belt line was polished to a mirror finish to divide the black bottom from the white top. Chrome flashes such as the door hinges, tool and battery doors complete the look. Vent doors in the hood rather than louvers are also a special feature.”

Porsche Can-Am racer won 6 of 8 starts in 1973

The Porsche is owned by Rob Kauffman of Charlotte, North Carolina. It was driven for Penske Racing by Mark Donohue to victories in 6 of 8 races in 1973 and to the Can-Am series championship. Former car owner Roger Penske was honored by the 2020 concours, which also invited back all of its past honorees.

“After nearly a half century, Porsche’s 917/30 is still the most powerful circuit racing car ever made,” concours officials reported. “While no one knows the car’s ultimate top speed, it easily achieved speeds of over 200 mph at circuits like Watkins Glen and Riverside. It set a closed-course speed record of 221.16 mph at Talladega Superspeedway in 1975.

“Now 50 years later, that remains the fastest lap ever recorded on the steeply banked Alabama superspeedway.

“The 1929 Duesenberg J-218 Town Limousine and 1973 Porsche 917/10 Can-Am Spyder both embody the spirit of our awards,” said Bill Warner, chairman and founder of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

As part of the honoring of Penske’s career, more than 30 former Penske racing cars were displayed on the concours show field.

February 4th, 2020, Whidbey Cruzer News Letter

Meeting called to order by Pres Jackie.  All officers present.  31 members in attendance.

Jackie thanked Jim & Joanie Flowers for inviting the club to tour his garage on Saturday, Jan 18th, and attending the 5:30pm dinner afterwards at Flyers Brewery in Oak Harbor.

The club was reminded of Brenda’s Social on Feb 9th and that the particulars were emailed to all members from Deanna.

A reminder to mark your calendar:  Annual Cruzers Summer Round-A-Voo* will be on Saturday, July 11th starting at noon.  Same place as 2019, Skyline Property Owners Beach Cabana, 5919 Cabana Way, Anacortes.  Watch for separate emails for updates!

Vice Pres Jeff informed the club that he intends to generate a Projection Calendar which will list all the upcoming Cruzer activities monthly.  For the month of March there will be a Poker run that will start at Island Pizza on March 21st.  There will be more information forthcoming on the particulars for this event. The idea is to have one Thursday a month dedicated to a Cruzer event.  Activities being considered are a Car show at the Whidbey Golf Club, attending the movie “Ford vs Ferrari”, Pizza at Ciao’s in Coupeville, Oak Harbor Car Show (Aug 8 & 9th) at City Beach.

Kathy provided our bank statement: Beginning Balance – $5,637.32, Intake – $63.00, Exhaust – $181.91, and our Ending Balance – $5,518.71.

Duane reported the club currently has 104 members and we have new business cards which he passed out to give to prospective new members.  He also has a revised Cruzer application form to be used for new members.

Lana provided Sunshine notes: Sent cards to Mary Benninghoff and Brenda Ackley as they were not feeling good. Also sent a card to Molly McIntosh who broke her leg. Sent a card to Dan Dillard who is home with a medical issue. Ed Hammond is recuperating from his last treatment. Carrie Harris has been dealing with asthma since December and will undergo sinus surgery when she has recovered from pneumonia. Mike Harris had skin cancer surgery and now has shingles.

Ron informed the members about HB2373 which affects those members with collector cars.  This Bill currently in Olympia changes the licensing to every 5 years.

UPDATE:  Per Senator Ron Muzzall, this Bill, HB2373, which was in committee, did not make it out before the deadline on Feb 7th and therefore is a dead issue.

UPDATE: Bill Morrow was involved in a spin out in his Ranger on Hiway 20 near Anacortes on Feb 6th when he hit a pool of water on the road.  Bill required EMT assistance for his injuries and is ok except for bumps and bruises.  It was a frightening experience and his pick up was totaled.

Don Bierce won the 50/50 raffle along with duties of handling the raffle at next meeting.

Next meeting, March 3, at Oak Harbor VFW

Everyone that comes to our shows wants to know more about the cars that are here and hear how they were acquired, restored, and maintained.  We wanted to create a platform that allows all that to happen easily.

Beginning in June of 2019 we’re video recording an interviews with any of the car owners that would like to have their car featured in our Classic Car Spotlight.

The interview lasts ABOUT 10 minutes and is a very easy flowing and casual conversation between two car guys.  There’s no pressure and it’s about as easy as telling the people that walk by your car your story.

If you have interest please contact Lew or stop by the ShutterPassion Photography booth and speak to Glenn.
